Inscriptions are one of the reasons we open the book you're returning - if it has one, don't try to return it. Authors signing books sign not on the first title page (which has a smaller title and little else) but the second, fancier title page (which has a bigger title and the author's name). "A comparison of the inscription with the Dream of the Rood shows that the former is not an extract from an earlier poem written in the long Caedmonian line which is postulated by Vigfusson and Powell, and by Mr. Stopford Brooke, since the earliest dated verse is in short lines only, and since four of the lines in the cross inscription.

Because of the realistic and harrowing descriptions of brutalities, I only recommend it for adult readers but I /5(99).

This is a "great" book, and in my opinion, is one of the best books on the Cross of Jesus Christ. This is actually my second copy. I wore out the first and since I knew I was going to read it again (3rd reading) I wanted a new copy. I would highly recommend that all believers in Jesus Christ should read this book and to meditate on it s: These developed inscriptions were most likely formed because in the Middle Ages people mistakenly read the letter E as H. According to a legend, this inscription with the cross was seen by emperor Constantine the Great in his sleep before the battle against Maxentius in on the Ponte Milvio.

In John it tells how Pilate wrote the inscription and had it placed on the cross above the head of Jesus. The inscription was translated into most of our English Bibles as "Jesus the Nazarene (or of Nazareth), the King of the Jews." The Bible records that it was.

The initialism INRI represents the Latin inscription IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum), which in English translates to "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" (). John states that this was written in three languages: Hebrew, Latin and Greek and was put on the cross of Jesus.

The Greek version of the initialism reads ΙΝBΙ, representing Ἰησοῦς ὁ. The Ruthwell Cross is a stone Anglo-Saxon cross probably dating from the 8th century, when the village of Ruthwell, now in Scotland, was part of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria.

It is the most famous and elaborate Anglo-Saxon monumental sculpture, and possibly contains the oldest surviving text, predating any manuscripts containing Old English poetry.

Both Luke and John tell us that the inscription on the Cross of Jesus was written in three languages, Greek, Latin and Hebrew. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that three of the Gospel writers each chose to quote a different language, and that one writer chose to.

When Jesus was crucified, Pilate wrote an inscription and had it placed on the cross above Jesus’ head. Each gospel quotes the inscription differently. 18 There they crucified him 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Ioudaioi (traditionally translated as “the Jews”).” 20 Many of the Ioudaioi read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

The inscription mentioned by John is the famous letters “INRI”, depicted still above the crucified Jesus. The acronym, which stands for the Latin “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum“, means “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” But John specifies that the inscription was also in Hebrew.

And in John, the inscription at the head of the cross is pointedly written "Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews" (John ). The inscription INRI at the top of the cross is the Latin Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum.
